Mount Rinjani
Wild Life
Rinjani National Park sits in the major transition zone (Wallacea), where Southeast Asian flora and fauna dramatically shift into Australasia’s unique biodiversity. The park hosts a rich variety of plants and animals, though the dense rainforest and rugged terrain make them difficult to spot. Early in the morning, trekkers may catch a glimpse of the rare black Ebony leaf monkey, locally known as Lutung.

Trail
The annual Hindu ceremony of Mulang Pekelem on Mount Rinjani attracts hundreds of celebrants each year. This heritage event dates back to the 18th-century Balinese invasion and their subsequent settlement of Lombok from the Kingdom of Karangasem.
The climb from Mount Rinjani POS 2 to POS 3 remains manageable. The real challenge on the Sembalun route begins from POS 3 to POS Extra, where the uphill gradient reaches up to 50 degrees. Young children may struggle with this section, as some steps are spaced far apart. The cooler weather at this altitude can make it seem like the body needs less hydration, but drinking plenty of fluids is essential to prevent altitude sickness. Surprisingly, a vendor sells cold drinks like Pocari Sweat and Coke at the campsite, though at exorbitant prices (40,000 Rp per drink) for those craving a refreshment. Spend the night at the campsite and start the summit trek at 3 AM the next day.

Rinjani Trekking operates in Senaru, Bayan – North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. It serves as a club for all porters and trekking guides in Rinjani National Park.
Established in 1992 with just 10 members, including porters and trekking guides, the club has now grown to include over 55 members. As Mount Rinjani became a major tourist attraction in Lombok, the Rinjani Trekking Club in Senaru expanded and is now based in Senaru Village, under the leadership of Mr. Eki as the organizer.
In January 2003, the Gunung Rinjani National Park Project (GRNPP) was renamed the Gunung Rinjani National Park: Rinjani Trek Ecotourism Programme (RTEP) to reflect its evolving priorities. In July 2002, NZODA rebranded as NZAID. The program has been operating from its Mataram office since October 1999.
To support its objectives, the National Park developed this occasional newsletter to facilitate information sharing among the diverse groups invested in Rinjani. These stakeholders include national, regional, and local governments, local and international NGOs, conservation organizations, the tourism industry, village communities, and both Indonesian and foreign visitors to this stunning national park.
